What is Catalytic Converter?

Catalytic Converter is a an Automobile Device that is used to reduce the Harmful Gases or Emissions from vehicles. The word Catalytic looks like new but it is not; the purpose of a catalytic converter is prominent and environment saving. The harmful components release by the automobiles (two wheeler, four wheeler, etc.) are Nitrogen Gas (N2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Hydrocarbons (HC), Nitrogen Oxides, etc., from their exhaust pipes.

How Does Catalytic Converter Works?

As a Catalytic Converter purpose is to reduce the pollutants from engine; the emissions are treating with the Oxygen for chemical reaction.  Generally, the Catalytic Converter is placed or fixed in the exhaust system of the vehicles which is convenient to perform the operation.

what can we learn from this post?

  • Working of Catalytic Converter
  • Catalytic Chemistry.
  • Catalytic Converter Material.
  • Catalytic Converter Types
  • How do Catalytic Converter helps the Environment?
  • Conclusion

working of Catalytic Converter:

Every automobile engine emits harmful gases in the form of Hydro Carbons( HC), Carbon monoxide(CO)Nitrogen Gas (NO2), etc. Besides of engine designed to reduce the harmful gases, a device is used that helps us to reduce the pollutants by converting the harmful gases into harm-less gases. The conversion of harmful to harmless gas will be done by treating the oxygen with the exhaust gases.

The exhaust gas will flow through the silencer or outgoing pipe and the catalytic will be placed in the flow process and due to this placement, the exhaust harmful gases will be treated with oxygen automatically.

Let’s see what happens when the exhaust gases are treated with oxygen by catalytic converter.

Catalytic Chemistry:

Catalytic Converter Chemistry will be as follow:

After treatment of harmful compounds with oxygen, we can find Water, Carbon dioxide, and Nitrous oxide as the outcomes. It means Carbon Monoxide (Co) will be converted into Carbon dioxide, No into Nitrous oxide.

Now, let us see what actually this converter is made up of.

Catalytic Converter Material:

Palladium, Platinum, and Rhodium are the materials used in the Catalytic. Those two materials will convert the CO, HC into CO2, and H2O. Rhodium helps NOx to reach other compounds.

Catalytic Converter Types:

According to their functions, catalytic converters are classified into two types. They are

1. Two-Way Converter.

2. Three-Way Converter.

The Two-Way Converter will convert the CO into CO2 and HC into water or H2O. It means Two-way Converter converts only two harmful compounds. So it is named the two-way converter.

The Three-way converter will do one more work; it will convert 3 compounds into harmless gases compared to the Two-way. The third gas that the three-way converter will convert is Nitrogen oxides. It means that it will split the Nitrogen oxides into Nitrogen and oxygen.

Now, let us see how this converter help the environment.

How do Catalytic Converters help the Environment?

As we all know, the air is polluting mostly because of the gases that emit from the vehicles, the new vehicles are entering on the road and the population of vehicles is increasing multiply day by day.

At this point of time, the catalytic is helping as its part in reducing the harmful compounds in the exhaust gases. So we can say that air pollution is controlling even a decimal percentage with this  converter.

Conclusion:

Due to the fuel that we use in the engines, the exhaust gases will consist of harmful components and which is impossible to remove by the complete burning of the fuel in the combustion process so the catalytic will hopefully help us to convert or reduce the harmful exhaust components in the gases.

There will be different types of catalytics that can be used in the vehicles according to their function. So catalytic will be one of the components that help the environment to control the pollution.s
