What is a Boiler?
A Boiler is a metallic closed vessel (mostly Cylindrical Tank) that is made up of metal and rivets to prevent leakage. The Boiler and different types of boilers does consist of a number of accessories and devices that help the boiler for its functioning. The accessories and devices will vary according to the types of boilers.
The devices may be mechanical or electrical according to the different boiler types applications and requirements of the Boiler working in a particular area.
The Boiler is used to convert the water into steam that we called as Steam Boilers or Steam Generators. Not only the water, but the boiler is also used to convert the different types of liquids into vapour and sometimes it is used to increase the temperature for a certain level itself so, the types of boilers usage will be depending upon this features.

Classification And Types Of Boilers:
The classification of boilers and types of boilers depends upon their application, purpose, and construction. The classification of boilers and their types are as follows
Types Of Boilers According To The Firing
- Fire Tube Boiler
- Water Tube Boiler
Types Of Boilers According To The Layout
- Longitudinal Boiler
- Cross Drum Boiler
- Stirling Boiler
Types Of Boilers According To The Number Of Tubes
- Single Tube Boiler
- Multi-Tube Boiler
Types Of Boilers According To The Circulation Of Water
- Natural Circulation Boiler
- Forced Circulation Boiler
According To The Source
- Fuel Type Boiler
- Electric Type Boiler
Working of Simple Steam Boiler:
The Simple Steam Boiler is that which works for a basic requirement. So, the boiler that is used to convert the water into the steam using the heat (internal feeding or external feeding) can be said to be a Simple Steam Boiler.
The boiler should be well constructed without any leakage of water and even steam too. The water is sent into the boiler using a pump. The water should be free of any dust and particles. The heat is added to the boiler and water using any kind of fuel(whether the fuel may be wood, charcoal, or any other type of fuel).

As we know that the water is converted into steam when it attains a temperature of 100 degrees. The water is converted into steam and used for different purposes.
Note: We will learn about different types of fuels that use in different types of boilers functions in upcoming articles. Even the fuels usage will be depend upon the types of boilers.
If the steam is used in thermal power plants then the steam is sent into the turbine; if the steam is used in printing operations, then the steam is used to dry the printed papers. So, not only the water, there are various sources that are used in boilers according to the application.
Uses Of Boilers:
The uses of boilers are mostly in Industries and Thermal Power Plants. If we go into the depth, the uses of boilers are as follows
- Boilers are used to generate the steam where then the steam is used to generate the electricity.
- As told, there are different types of boilers that are not only used to convert the liquid into steam but also use to increase the temperature up to a certain level to dry up certain products.
Applications of Types Of Boilers:
The applications of different types of boilers are as follows
- The different types of boilers (according to size) are used in Thermal Power Plants to produce electricity.
- The boilers are used in the Printing Machine Industries (that uses for different purposes).
- Different types of boilers are used in Pharma Companies for their operations.
- The boilers are even used in Textile Industries for its operations.
Conclusion:
Boilers are being upgraded and result in different types of boilers according to the requirement of the applications whether it may be for large-scale industries or small-scale industries. We can find a number of boilers that’s been developed or invented using the above-mentioned classification types.
There are different types of boilers according to the size too, the boilers may be giant, medium, and smaller in size whereas; it depends upon the plant or industry size and its capacity of the application. The boilers require to over-haul (or cleanup or maintain properly) for every constant period of time to achieve good results and outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions:
A Boiler is a metallic closed vessel that is constructed using many machine tools and components like rivets. The boiler is used to convert the water (or any other liquid) into steam by using the external or internal firing process. The uses of boiler are vast and crucial in the manufacturing and production industries.
There are different types of boilers were classified. They are as follows
- Classification of Boilers according to the Firing Process
- Classification of Boilers according to the Layout
- Classification of Boilers according to the Number Of Tubes Usage
- Classification of Boilers according to the Source
- Classification of Boilers according to the Circulation Of Water
The Uses of Boilers are as follows
- The boilers are used to convert the water or any other liquid into steam and even up to A super-saturated state too.
- There are few applications where the boilers are used to increase the temperature of the liquids only.
There are few more uses according to the types of boilers which is an individual thing.
The Water Tube Boiler is one of types of boilers that is classified according to the firing process. Water Tube Boiler is a type of feeding of water into the boiler where; the boiler consists of A tube or we can say that the boiler is constructed with tubes so, the water is circulated in the tubes and the fire is introduced around those tubes.
Such a way that the water in the water tube will BE heated up and converted into steam.
The Fire Tube Boiler is a type of boiler that is classified according to the firing process. Fire Tube Boiler is a type of introducing the heating or fire into the boiler where; the boiler consists of a tube or we can say that the boiler is constructed with tubes so, the fire gases are allowed into the tubes and the water has surrounded the tubes.
So, the water around the fire tube will absorb the heat and be converted into steam.
The types of boilers that are classified according to the layout of the boiler are
- Longitudinal Boilers
- Vertical Boilers
- Stirling Boilers
The types of boilers that are classified according to the number of tubes in the boiler are
- Single Tube Boiler
The boiler that is constructed with only one tube is called the single tube boiler. It is used for less quantity types.
- Multi-Tube Boiler
The boiler that is constructed with more than one tube is called the Multi-Tube boiler. It is used for high quantity types.
The types of boilers that are classified according to the circulation of water in the boiler are
- Forced Circulation Boiler
In the Forced Circulation Boiler, the water is feed into the boiler using pumps or motors which we can say that the pump is pressurized and forced to send into the boilers.
- Natural Circulation Boiler
In the Natural Circulation Boiler, the water is feed into the boiler naturally by gravitation force which we can say that no external forces like pumps and motors are used to send the water into the boiler.
