Generally, a diesel engine requires an Air/Fuel ratio of 14.5:1 to start the vehicle, but no vehicle can achieve such a ratio due to the consumption of more fuel ratio and results in more fuel consumption. So to eradicate such loss and to give an economical ratio and more power to the engine, we need one of the two devices called Turbocharger and Supercharger.

Normally, the power of a vehicle can be increased in two ways.

  1. By increasing the pressure of the fuel.
  2. By increasing the CC (Cubic Centimeters) of the engine.

So the Turbocharger and Supercharger are useful to achieve the first category where the power of the vehicle increases with the help of these two devices.

What is Turbocharger and Supercharger?

Turbocharger and Supercharger both are devices that are used to increase the power of an Automobile. The pressure and the density of the air can be increased by external sources; the process of feeding the pressurized air into the engine is called Super Charging. The device that achieves such supercharging is called the Supercharger and the advanced version of the supercharger is the Turbocharger.

The turbocharger can be explained as the device that achieves a great power more than when compared to the Supercharger is called the Turbocharger.

How does a Supercharger work?

As it is told that Supercharger is the device that pressurizes the air, but how this pressurizing of air can be done, and how this supercharger do so?

The engine consists of many parts and a crankshaft is a device or part that stores the power developed by the combustion process, so Supercharger needs an external source to work and it is nothing but a crankshaft; the external source is nothing but a gear that is attached to the end of the crankshaft with special adjustment and through it, the supercharger will work.

The supercharger may be a rotary type or piston type. Due to the motion of the crankshaft, the air is sucked into the device and then compressed by the internal mechanism to high pressure. Due to the sucking of the air by an external source (supercharger) the air ratio will be achieved at a good rate and results in an increase in the pressure and density of the air.

Important points about Supercharger:

  1. It should be noted that this device works under an external source (Crankshaft output), so the output of the engine will slightly decrease due to the extra attachments.
  2. As this is a cyclic process, the efficiency of the device and the life span of the supercharger depends upon the engine output.

How does a Turbocharger works?

This is the advanced technology when we compared it to the supercharger. The fantastic feature of the Turbocharger is that it works without any external source like Crankshaft. The process is cyclic and the exhaust gas is the source responsible for the device working.

Yes, the exhaust gases of the engine are reused to run the turbocharger Turbine. Due to this the air is sucked and compressed. A turbocharger is a rotary type and it consists of two main components.

  1. Compressor
  2. Turbine.

The compressor and turbine are fixed to a single shaft at two ends. A pipe is fixed to the Output Manifold of the engine and connected to the input of the Turbocharger. Due to the pressure of the exhaust gas, the Turbine will rotate; as the turbine and the compressor is aligned on the same shaft, the compressor sucks and compresses the air to high pressure. The compressed air is sent to the input of the engine through the Input Manifold. According to this process, the power of the engine is increased.

Difference between Supercharger and Turbocharger:

The aim and working of both Turbocharger and Supercharger are the same but the working source by which it works and how it works, let us see their differences.

  • The Supercharger uses the energy of the crankshaft for its working whereas; Turbocharger uses the exhaust gases of the Engine for its process.
  • The Supercharger consists of a piston or rotor to compress the air whereas; the turbocharger uses the rotary blades to compress the air.
  • The turbocharger and supercharger both are constructed differently whereas; in the turbocharger, the turbine and compressor are aligned or fixed on one shaft and according to it, the working will take place and in the supercharger, two rotors are aligned so the air can be compressed in that gas.

Advantages of Supercharger and Turbocharger:

  • Usage of turbocharger and supercharger increases the air input percentage.
  • The power of the engine is increased due to this high-pressure air.
  • In the turbocharger, the exhaust gas is used to increase the power of the engine.
  • Supercharger and Turbocharger both helping the engine to achieve good efficiency.

Conclusion:

A lot of applications, trials are being done to give a good air-fuel ratio to the engine and to increase the power of the engine; the turbocharger and supercharger are standing as an answer to this. The turbocharger as being the advanced version of a supercharger works to increase the power of the engine.

We can find that the turbocharger and superchargers are being used by almost every automobile vehicle nowadays because of its usage. So, it is one of the important and useful devices in automobiles to achieve good power efficiency.
